We're Back!

After a refreshing holiday break GVI Thailand is back in business. As volunteers returned to their homes and travel adventures, staff members ventured as far as Laos, Vietnam, Australia, and Florida, while others chose to further explore the south of Thailand. Returning back to base relaxed and inspired, the Ao Luk base officially reopened for business on January 4, 2009 accepting new student applicants for GVI's free English classes in the Ao Luk Community. The January term will mark the 13th term of classes in the community.

Other things to look forward to in 2009: GVI Thailand will be working more closely with local schools in the coming years through a couple of project. GVI is beginning a brand new program for helping out teaching English at the local primary schools for short term volunteers (2 weeks and up). You can learn more about this project at http://www.gvi.co.uk/projects/Asia/Thailand/Short-term-volunteer-teaching-english-thailand/home .

The Ao Luk Village Project is also starting it's 2nd year of village projects throughout the district of Ao Luk. This year focus will be placed on the schools within these villages. Over the past year areas of interest have been narrowed down to litter and recycling projects, planting trees and mangroves, and English education in schools. Each Friday GVI volunteers will be working with local schools on some combination of these projects to provide the schools with English learning opportunities and Environmental Education.

Stay tuned for more news from Ao Luk in 2009. Best wishes for the year ahead!
