Mangrove Planting

This Ao Luk Village Project took place in the coastal Klong Rat village in the Laem Sak district of Ao Luk. Expedition Members joined the Ao Luk unit of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) and the local community to replant mangrove trees in a degraded wetlands area amongst rubber farms and palm groves that had been developed for agriculture. Some mangrove seedlings had already been planted about a year ago and they were returning for another round of planting in order to assist the forest in providing a more natural gradient. By planting trees all at once, the forest will mature and die around the same time whereas regular plants help the forest return to a complex ecosystem.

After planting hundreds of mangrove saplings and seedlings everyone traveled to Ao Nam, a nearby village famous for its beach, caves, mountains, and beautiful views. EMs had a picnic lunch and took time to explore before returning back to the expedition base.
