Burmese Migrant Workers Health and Safety Workshop

GVI was able to successfully plan and execute our first training workshop at the Burmese Resource Centre in Chiang Mai. Many thanks go out to Kate Power for putting this all together.

Kate has a background in Health and Safety from Australia, and so was a perfect match for MAP, one of the 32 Burmese groups served by the Resource Centre. MAP’s primary focus is on migrant workers health and safety. Many Burmese refugees find employment as migrant workers in Thailand.

GVI was approached by Sai Zoe of MAP foundation to develop and deliver workshops for construction based safety inspectors. Historically migrant workers are at high risk of workplace accidents for a range of reasons, including, but not limited to current workplace health and safety standards, lack of safety standards and enforcement in the workplace, lack of advocacy of their workplace health / safety rights, lack of understanding of how to work / operate safety, lack of understanding of what workplace hazards are and lack of safety training.

Migrant workers are at a heightened risk of significant lifestyle impact if they suffer from a workplace injury due to a lack of injury insurance coverage. Workshop Goal: For informed migrant communities to take actions to improve health and safety in the workplace.
