Children's Day in Ko Klang

The end of the first week for our new GVI volunteers came rather swiftly. After a week of getting to know all about one another there was a great desire to truly explore the new surroundings and get to know the community we would soon become ingrained in.

Gratefully, we were presented with the perfect opportunity- GVI had been invited to partake in Children’s Day on Ko Klang island. This small Muslim community was just a short long- tailed boat ride from Krabi town. It gave us all a chance to see a side of Thailand that few travelers to this region get to indulge in.

Children’s day was a celebration of the youth in this community but everyone came together to celebrate. Organised by Su , the local teaching coordinator and caretaker of GVI's intern Dave who is teaching on the island, the whole community brought food, drinks, ice cream and their robust energy to have a perfect day.

Upon our arrival we were taken to a shaded rug-covered area to rest. However, this moment of relaxation was short-lived as immediately the children pulled us up and into their enthusiastic games. We played a myriad of different sports throughout the day including Tug-of-war, musical chairs , balloon popping and a strange eating/relay game that left a number of GVI volunteers wet, covered in flour and unable to pop a balloon!

After the games ended we were treated to lunch and ice cream. It was an excellent end to one of the best days for the new volunteers. The community of Ko Klang really pulled us in and it was a great comfort to feel so easily accepted into our new home life.
