Village Project at Ban Laem Sak School

On Friday the GVI team visited Ban Laem Sak School in the Laem Sak sub district of Ao Luk. This primary and lower secondary school educates 700 of the areas children at a beautiful location on a hill overlooking the Laem Sak Cape and the ocean filled with stunning jutting rock formations. Those kids sure are lucky!

The school requested that the GVI teachers lead activities with 100 of the students in 4th-6th grade (aged 9-13). This was the first week of 2009 that the Village Projects began to incorporate English teaching and activities with environmental education and activities.

In the morning the students split up into 6 groups and rotated through 6 different activities. 5 of the activities were pure English fun and focused on numbers, animals, body parts, fruits, and colors.

The 6th group was focused around trash, litter, and recycling and was taught in both English and Thai. Students learned the English names of different pieces of trash they would probably encounter around their homes such as plastic bags, flip flops, glass bottles, Styrofoam, and banana peels. Through a fun activity cleaning up the classroom students decided if different pieces of trash could be composted, recycled, or had to be classified as trash. Students were asked to come up with creative uses to reuse the trash items instead of burying them or burning them. After completing the workshop, students made a promise to take care of their homes, to not litter, and put trash in the correct place. They were given stickers and made official members of the GVI Green Team.

The first job as members of the GVI Green Team was to help pick up the litter around the school. GVI's teachers teamed up with the 35 6th grade students and filled up bags of trash from around the school property.

Finally everyone escaped the sun for a well deserved lunch before the GVI teachers headed back to base.
