The GVI Ao Luk Village Project in Ao Naam

On Friday the 8th of August, the GVI team visited the village of Ao Naam as part of a longterm development project in collaboration with the mayor of Ao Luk, the Ao Luk community development office, and the heads of the 52 villages that make up Ao Luk. Ao Naam is located in the coastal sub district of Laem Sak, home to the newly built pier providing access to Phang Nga Bay islands.

On this particular Friday GVI was called upon by the local unit of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to help replant mangroves in a degraded wetland area of Ao Naam. GVI and the DMCR were joined by 60 school children from Ao Naam School and their teachers, and a representative from Wetlands International, one of GVI Thailand's local partners. Together they planted hundreds of mangrove saplings on the coast.

Following the planting the school children split up into 4 groups in which they took part in simple English games and activities with the GVI teachers. Both teachers and students had a great time! After the games everyone joined forces to pick up trash which littered the beautiful expanse of Ao Luk's beach, a stunning stretch backed by the Phang Nga bay and a number of karst islands jutting dramatically out of the sea.

After the clean up students returned back to school for the afternoon. The GVI Thailand team finished off their trip with a picnic lunch on the beach.
