10/10/10 Work Party in Ban Klang!

On 10/10/10 GVI Thailand volunteers, staff and visiting GVI directors from Asia and Africa joined the Ban Klang community to make improvements on the Non-Formal Education satellite center in the Ban Klang sub district of Ao Luk. The education center is on a the property of a local mosque and is used to host classes for young children up to adults.

The project day also coincided with an international work day inspired by 350.org which inspires to solve the carbon crisis by working to lower the carbon in the atmosphere from the current level of 392 parts per million to what is considered to be the safe level of 350 parts per million.

As part of the 350 project everyone helped to plant trees, install energy efficient light bulbs and pick up trash. Other improvement projects included painting classrooms, fixing windows and general cleaning and maintenance. GVI Thailand also presented local officials with canvas bags to encourage everyone to use instead of plastic bags.

Everyone took a lunch break together enjoying an amazing lunch of "khao mok gai", a delicious chicken biryani dish popular in Thai Muslim communities.

After work was complete in the afternoon a big BBQ was held at the GVI Ao Luk base. Everyone enjoyed chicken and veggies skewers, grilled fish, hot dogs, cole slaw and other tasty treats. The feast was topped off with homemade custard and Nutella cakes decorated with the words "GVI" and "10/10 2010 GVI Ao Luk".

The day was a successful and exhausting one. The community and the GVI team had a great time together working hard for a good cause.
