NFE Opening Ceremony in Tham Phet

Thursday was an opening ceremony for yet another one of the Ao Luk Non-Formal Education (NFE) Centers throughout sub districts in Ao Luk. This one was located in the village of Tham Phet in the Ao Luk Nuea sub district of Ao Luk. Besides GVI's presence there were also booths making shadow puppets, making homemade soaps and shampoos, arts and crafts, tons of food and musical and dance performances by members of the community.

As GVI is partnered with the Ao Luk NFE Center, volunteers and staff are asked to assist with regular special events and educational programs in the community.

GVI volunteers and staff offered face painting for the children for Tham Phet's primary school. Although there were a variety of options including butterflies, suns, stars, rainbows and smiley faces by far the most popular choice was world flags. With the world cup still going on several schools students wanted flags of their favorite team's nations and some had up to 8 flags on their face, hands and arms!

GVI also hosted activities teaching English about the local natural environment. A word search was extremely popular and students able to find words such as mountain or beach were awarded with a pen or pencil.

Despite the rain, it was a fun and relaxing afternoon in one of Ao Luk's local villages.
