King's Birthday Celebration

In honor of the King of Thailand's birthday/ Father's day, Ao Luk hosted a huge 3 day festival called "Rak Ao Luk" for the 4th year in a row. From 3-5 December the community of Ao Luk, from various villages, came together to show off tradition dance, music, art, crafts and food.

The GVI team hosted a booth at the event with face painting, paper airplane making, play dough and sold sandwiches, T-shirts and canvas bags.

On Saturday night 4 volunteers and 4 staff members performed a traditional southern Thai dance which they had been secretly practicing for the last few weeks. 4 males carried the tools (not real ones!) used for harvesting rubber.. The four female partners danced with them wearing elaborate Thai costumes.

The community loved seeing their favorite English teachers performing a local dance! And it was a great opportunity for the GVI team to learn more about the local culture and interact with the community.
