Last Few Days and Goodbyes!

Here's a run down of the final few days of the Teaching and Community Development Expedition in Thailand:

On Tuesday Expedition Members returned rested from their long weekend break. In the evening there was a handover presentation which is the third assignment of the 100-hour TEFL qualification. EMs and staff teachers presented the class they taught to provide information for the teacher that would be taking on the class in the future. Information includes the students and their strengths and weaknesses, curriculum and topics covered and missed, and advice for teachers teaching that level and students. The presentation was followed by a delicious dinner of Khao Mok Gai or chicken briyani. Khao Mok Gai is a delicious chicken and rice dish cooked by the local Islamic community and is infused with spices and topped with a spicy and sour sauce. Yummy!

Wednesday was a project day focused on work at the Non-Formal Education Centre and the base. Each 5 weeks, EMs and staff teachers are responsible for cleaning up the classrooms that they utilized at the NFE Centre. Back at base everyone worked on multimedia digital English lessons for the future English Self Access Library (SAL) which is planned to officially open up in 2009 in cooperation with GVI Thailand and the Ao Luk NFE Centre. Wednesday finished off with a big BBQ Bonanza on base complete with grilled chicken, beef, and hamburgers as well as corn, coleslaw, salad, and french fries. This was our first opportunity to try out our new recycled BBQ!
On Thursday after a final clean up of the base to leave things spic and span for new EMs arriving on Friday, we said a sad farewell to friends who will be leaving us after 5 weeks of teaching and training and bonding. We wish them the best of luck in their future ventures of work, travel, studies and life and hope they are able to utilize the skills they have gained in the last 5 weeks to do some good in the world. 4 EMs from Australia, England, and the USA remain on as Newly Qualified Teachers taking on classes in the Ao Luk community awaiting the arrival of 6 newbie teachers!
