King's Birthday Celebration/Father's Day

The 3-5th of December marked a huge celebration at Ao Luk's district office in honor of the King of Thailand's 81st birthday on the 5th which also serves as Thailand's Father's Day. This is a huge event in Thailand and the people of Ao Luk certainly know how to hold a birthday party. Each sub district built a traditional old style Thai house made from bamboo and wood in which they represented their communities highlights such as agricultural techniques, handicrafts, natural attractions, etc. Many gathered to sell traditional Thai food, batik clothing, dance, play music, and demonstrate Thai arts.

GVI was asked to join their partners, the Ao Luk Non-Formal Education Centre, by overseeing a stall at the festival. For 3 days GVI sold tuna and egg salad sandwiches and hosted apple bobbing for the community to participate in. In order to cut down on waste and bring a message of conservation with them GVI used only recycled materials to serve their goods such as boxes and envelopes made with recycled paper and old magazines and lined with banana leaves.

The festival was great fun and provided another opportunity for GVI's Expedition Members to get involved with the local community and experience real Thailand.
