Kwan-O Village Project

On the 5th of September 2008, the GVI team paid a visit to the Kwan-O Village in the Ao Luk Noi Sub district of Thailand. The day began at Kwan-O school where Expedition Members (EMs) led simple English games and activities with 70 school children from 4th-6th grades.

After a quick lunch the GVI team along with 40 school children, 3 teachers and 2,000 mangrove seedlings and saplings hopped into 2 long-tailed boats. They sped out through the mangrove waterway to a degraded spot of mangrove wetland. In the past these trees were removed to make charcoal by the villagers and more recently the local Department of Marine and Coastal Resources along with the villagers have worked at replanting these areas in stages. With over 50 people helping, the 2,000 trees per planted in no time.

Once the trees were planted, the school kids headed back on one of the boats while EMs and a handful of villagers continued on to explore the amazing beauty of what is called "Ko Ka Rot". This mountain island starting in an estuary and sticking out into the open sea is one of Ao Luk's most stunning hidden secrets.
