Burmese Refugees: Why this New Project is so Important

GVI Thailand operates a program out of Chiang Mai that helps the neglected illegal Burmese immigrants who flood into Thailand each year.

Each year thousands of Burmese Refugees smuggle themselves over the border into Thailand in hopes of a brighter future, fleeing from ethnic cleansing under a brutal military regime in Burma. But their story doesn't end there. These displaced people continue to endure hardship living without rights in their new home, in marginalised communities without access to health care or education and forced into labour camps or what's increasingly referred to as "modern slavery".
