Matt's Homestay Adventure!
Matt at his cozy abode
I recently had the opportunity to visit Matt, one of our volunteers who was taking part in the homestay option of GVI Thailand's Volunteer with Children project. Matt volunteered with GVI Thailand for a total of four weeks. He spent his first two weeks at GVI base in Ao luk followed by two weeks on the beautiful island of Koh Klang, a ten minute boat ride from Krabi town.

When I met up with Matt he was just returning from a day at the local primary school. He'd been teaching at the island's main school athough there are two others serving the outlying villages. His schedule had him teaching primarily in the mornings; however, on this day he taught an afternoon class as well. Most days he has had the afternoons and evenings free to relax, explore the island, spend time with his homestay family or head in to Krabi town to check email. The primary school teaches English Monday through Thursday, leaving Friday free to explore the wider region. This week he'd been invited by the local boatmen to go on a day trip to Railay beach.
A building at the primary school
After giving me a tour of his cozy accommodation, Matt and I set out to explore the island. After making a stop at the local primary school, we headed across the street to the coast and soaked up some positively stunning views across the Andaman on a tranquil beach, shared only by a father and his kids out on a relaxing evening walk.
Incredible views
When we returned home, our host, Su, was busy preparing a lovely meal of grilled fish and curry over rice. We were in the thick of Ramadan so the kids were milling about anxiously awaiting the call to eat. Throughout the evening we ate and visited with Su and her family on their deck, enjoying the cool night air, delicious food and delightful company. All told, I was happy to report that Matt was having a wonderful time and a bit envious - I'd had such a lovely day and I didn't want it to end!

After finishing dinner, Matt was invited to join Su's husband for Roti and I headed back to Krabi on a longtail boat. The day I'd spent on Koh Klang was so memorable. The community is wonderful and I'm sure time spent there will be equally as unforgettable for future volunteers. The mix of natural beauty, cultural exposure and the amazing people you'll meet makes this an opportunity not to be missed!
